A happy ending to a long day.

Yesterday Man-boy and I made the trip to Bethesda for what we hope is the last time. I have no earthly idea how anyone puts up with the D.C. beltway traffic every day, twice a day. We left the National Naval Medical Center at 4 pm just in time for the evening rush hour, and it took us 3 hours to travel the approximately 70 miles home.

When we got home, I was throwing together some tuna and egg salad sandwiches for dinner when the phone rang. It was for Man-boy, who was in the front yard taking out his rush-hour induced aggressions on a soccer ball, so I stepped out on the front porch to hand him the phone. When I did, I saw a package with the rest of our mail sitting out there.

Here's what the package contained:

Yes, folks, that is our very favorite crumb cake from our very favorite bakery in Bay Head, New Jersey. A good friend from high school heard Ben was feeling puny and decided to send him a little carb-heavy love. We're friends with George in spite of the fact that he's a Yankees fan. We love him even more now!

This is a dense, heavy crumb cake

that's about 90% crumb and 10% cake. Amazing. Thanks, George!

This is one of the things we miss the most about New Jersey—this and pork roll and good pizza. But now we've found out we can have crumb cake and pork roll shipped. Now we have to figure out how to have pizzas delivered 300 miles away.

Be thankful ~

Karen

Yum! I've been thinking about making my crumbly coffee cake all day long, and your pictures just sealed the deal for me... I'm going to have to be making myself some of that tonight!
